Part of building collapses in Downtown El Paso

The front of a building collapsed, raining bricks onto a sidewalk in Downtown El Paso, but causing no reported injuries, a police spokesman said.

Emergency crews responded to the collapse about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the 800 block of South El Paso Street, which is lined with stores catering to cross-border shoppers, El Paso Police Department spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros said in a media message.

A vehicle did not crash into the building, contrary to some inaccurate news reports, Cisneros added, explaining that a vehicle at the scene was struck by the debris.
The red-brick building appeared to be two stories with large ornate windows lining the second floor. The street was blocked off by police as a precaution.

El Paso Fire Department spokesman Hector Gonzalez said in an email that the building was vacant at the time and there were no reported injuries. The building’s address is 805 S. El Paso St.
“At this time, we do not have the details about how the collapse occurred. We are currently investigating,” Gonzalez said.

There were no reported injuries. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the area.
