EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Police documents reveal that a Lower Valley SWAT standoff started as a dispute between a stepfather and his stepson, who disapproved of his mother’s relationship.

On March 13, 38-year-old Rodolfo Marcelino Rodriguez was arrested in the 9500 block of Martinique Drive in the Lower Valley after a SWAT standoff following reports of a domestic disturbance.

On Sunday, the El Paso Police Department released information describing the incident, saying that Rodriguez allegedly threatened his 66-year-old stepfather with a kitchen knife and sprayed an air freshener in his face, before the stepfather ran out of the home and called 911.

On Wednesday, newly obtained police documents reveal that the stepfather told investigators that he had been dating Rodriguez’s mother for 12 years now and that Rodriguez had not approved of the relationship.

For that same reason, the stepfather said that he avoids Rodriguez, adding that he is “hostile, suffers from mental health problems and uses narcotics.”

The stepfather told investigators that from time to time, Rodriguez stays at his mother’s home because “he is homeless.”

When describing the alleged attack, the stepfather told investigators that he was taking a shower when he heard Rodriguez enter the home looking for his mother.

The stepfather said Rodriguez found him in the bathroom while he was nude and approached him holding a kitchen knife in one hand and an air freshener in the other– demanding that he leave the home.

The stepfather stated he tried to de-escalate the situation, telling Rodriguez, “Mijo, calm down, your mom invited me over.”

The stepfather then said he was sprayed and the chemicals got in his eyes, nose and mouth– burning his eyes– before he ran away seeking help.

Rodriguez then barricaded himself in the home, calling his mother to tell her he didn’t want to leave the home and get arrested, as he was having anxiety and a mental health breakdown, according to the report.

In the arrest report, investigators described picking up the air freshener from the scene and tagging it as evidence.

However, when it came to the kitchen knife, investigators said the stepfather was unable to pick which knife it was out of the set found in the kitchen, as all the knives are identical.

Rodriguez was later booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, first on a $35,000 bond; however, that was later lowered to $10,000.

As of Wednesday afternoon, jail records show Rodriguez remains in jail.
