Today’s Big Stories

1. Labor rights leader Dolores Huerta says she was sexually assaulted by César Chávez

The United Farm Workers union has distanced itself from annual celebrations of its founder, César Chávez amid allegations of sexual abuse, including from fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta, who spoke out about her experience for the first time in 60 years.

In a statement Tuesday, the union said allegations of “abuse of young women or minors” were concerning enough to urge people around the country to participate in immigration justice events or acts of service instead of the typical events in March to commemorate Chávez’s legacy. The union said it will not be taking part in any César Chávez Day activities.

2. Dallas County GOP will switch back to countywide voting sites for May runoff

Dallas County will officially scrap precinct-based voting locations and proceed with countywide sites for the upcoming May runoff elections.

This comes after countless voters were turned away from the polls earlier this month, leading to a lawsuit by the Dallas County Democratic Party that was later dropped.

3. Cornyn reconsiders Senate filibuster as he and Paxton stay in runoff race

When former President Joe Biden pushed to change the Senate’s filibuster rule that requires a 60-vote majority in order to pass voting rights legislation, it prompted criticism from the senior senator from Texas.

But now, Sen. John Cornyn is open to some procedural changes. This comes as Congress has failed to fund the Department of Homeland Security. The partial government shutdown has led to long lines at airports in Texas and across the country.
