EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso is moving forward with a major expansion of The Beast Urban Park on the city’s Eastside, with a public groundbreaking ceremony planned for Phase II of the project.

The City of El Paso Capital Improvement and Parks and Recreation departments held a groundbreaking event on Wednesday as construction began on the $15 million Phase II expansion.

The project will add 650,000 square feet to the park’s complex and include four diamond fields with dugout shelters, 10 pickleball courts, two handball courts, two sand volleyball courts, two basketball courts, bleachers, and bike racks.

The expansion also includes additional parking, food truck parking, landscaping, irrigation systems, shade canopies, fencing, restrooms, and other site amenities.

“Phase II of The Beast Urban Park is an investment in our youth, our health, and the everyday moments that bring a community together and make a lasting impact,” said City Representative Ivan Niño of District 5.

The Beast Urban Park is being developed in multiple phases, with plans over time to transform about 92 acres into a public space aimed at expanding recreational, educational, and cultural opportunities.

The first phase of The Beast Urban Park opened in 2021. It included a recreation facility featuring a natatorium with an indoor 50-meter competition pool and diving well, a warm-up pool, gymnasium, fitness areas, community room, and an outdoor water park with a surfing machine, along with other amenities.
