Harris County Commissioners Court is set for today, and one of the item’s on the agenda is raising some eyebrows. Local Democrats want a union for County employees.
“This proposal was put on the agenda by Democratic Commissioner, Rodney Ellis” said Holly Hansen, reporter for The Texan, “This is raising some concerns amongst people who are worried about a full unionization of County employees.”
The Lone Republican, Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, opposes the idea, especially after the pay raises that workers have received over the last two years. But this ‘union’ idea may not really be about the workers.
“You could be looking at an attempt to shore up that support for Democrats, like Rodney Ellis and the other Democrats on Commissioner’s Court” Hansen told KTRH.
And in addition to that, the meeting will be the first since ‘Rodeogate’, when outgoing Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo caused a scene at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last week.
Hidalgo has since fled to Europe, on what she calls a ‘trade mission’ trip. Commissioner Ramsey, who has called for Hidalgo to resign, plans to bring up the incident during Commissioner’s Court.
Hidalgo will not be there in person, and we’re not sure if she will attempt to join via Zoom.
