SAN ANTONIO – A suspected illegal gambling operation was shut down Thursday as Bexar County deputies also uncovered multiple cases of animal cruelty across the county.

Investigators raided a home near E Harding Blvd and Roosevelt Ave that had previously been targeted in 2022, when more than $30,000 was seized. This time, deputies found several people inside, along with roughly 50 gaming machines and a large safe filled with cash.

Two people were arrested, one for drug possession and another for an outstanding theft warrant. Additional charges could follow, including possible action against the property owner, who has been linked to the location in past cases.

Officials say these types of operations often bring increased crime and traffic into neighborhoods and can be difficult to detect.

While that investigation unfolded, deputies were also responding to disturbing animal cruelty cases elsewhere in the county.

In one case, seven dogs were rescued from an RV on Elm Forest Road, where they had been living in extreme filth. Deputies described the conditions as dangerous, with overwhelming ammonia levels from accumulated waste. The dogs are now in the care of animal control, and charges are expected.

In a separate case, a severely malnourished dog was removed from a home after neighbors reported concerns. The dog, found on a balcony surrounded by feces, showed clear signs of long-term neglect. One person was arrested.
