HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — According to the American Automobile Association, gas prices in Houston are up 41% from last month.

For some, it may not be a big deal, but for others, rising prices mean major life changes.

“I used to fill up my car for $20 to $25, now $20 only gives me half a tank,” Houstonian Dee Hunter said. “We’ll all need an electric scooter or a horse and buggy.”

AAA estimates the average price of a tank of gas in Houston is now $3.46. However, ABC13 drove around and found one station near the Galleria charging $4.59, and another in the Fifth Ward charging $3.39.

Different prices in different areas, but all higher than they were just a few weeks ago.

“Literally while we’re speaking, gas could be going up,” Houstonian Cynthia Nauls said. “If it was $3.09 yesterday, it’s $3.49 now.”

Nauls is taking a computer class at the Wesley Community Center, a nonprofit in the Near Northside, and is trying to create a new family budget plan.

“Everyone’s not making $15 an hour, everybody’s not making $20 an hour,” she said.

With an uncertain financial future, Nauls said she’s turning inward, focusing on what she can control.

“We look at the news. We look at TikTok and Facebook,” she said. “No, your house. What can I do to help the situation that I have going on here?”
