A charming home recently listed for sale in King William has deep ties to King William himself.

The house, listed for $915,000, once belonged to Hugo Griesenbeck, a relative of Kaiser Wilhelm I, King of Prussia, according to the listing. However, it doesn’t go into further detail about how Griesenbeck was related to the Prussian monarch.

The Kaiser Wilhelm neighborhood in San Antonio was later anglicized to King William when Germany entered World War I.

Little is known about Hugo Griesenbeck. An archived 1909 edition of the San Antonio Light and Gazette shows that he was an officer in something called the Early Birds of the San Antonio Singing and Social Society, another piece of San Antonio history lost to time.

Whatever Griesenbeck’s history, the house itself is a Victorian showpiece.

Though it appears diminutive from the curb, the dwelling exudes charm with painted gables, elaborate woodwork and stained glass windows. Inside, rich hardwood floors extend throughout, complimented by transoms, built-ins and other fine woodwork. Windows are tall, matching the grand scale of the stately setting.

The living room, kitchen and dining room have been opened up into one airy space with a vaulted, wood paneled ceiling, lending a contemporary aspect to the century home.

Updates in the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home have been executed tastefully, including bright bathrooms with subway tile, clawfoot bathtubs and pedestal sinks. The primary bedroom features its own en suite bathroom and private balcony.

If not fit for a king, it’s at least fit for one of his relatives.

This home is listed by Caroline Decherd with Phyllis Browning Company.
