Keller Mayor Armin Mizani will face Democrat Cate Brennan in the race for Texas House District 98.

KELLER, Texas — While Keller Mayor Armin Mizani easily won his Republican primary, and Texas House District 98 is one of the most conservative districts in the United States, he says he’s not taking anything for granted in the general election.

“We saw what’s happened in SD 9 and how that became much more competitive than it needed to be,” Mizani told us on Inside Texas Politics. “I think ultimately as Republicans, we need to continue to advocate on the issues that matter to most people, affordability, taxes, school funding. And I think Republicans have a strong track record when it comes to those issues but we’ve got to make sure that we message that between now and November.

State Senate District 9 is where Democrat Taylor Rehmet recently scored a special election upset victory over Republican Leigh Wambsganss, giving Democrats some hope for the fall.

In the general election, Mizani will face Democrat Cate Brennan.

While TX SD 9 does overlap some with TX HD 98, Mizani doesn’t expect lightning to strike twice for Democrats. Still, he says Republicans have some work to do in the district.

“I think we need to make sure that we’re reaching out to folks that perhaps have not participated in primary elections, making sure that they understand what Republicans stand for, how we’re going to improve their lives,” the Mayor explained.

If he wins the general election, Mizani says he wants to lower property taxes, a popular GOP talking point. And he supports the Lieutenant Governor’s “Operation Double Nickel” proposal that would increase the state’s homestead exemption by another $40,000. It would also lower the age Texans could receive senior property tax benefits to 55.

The Republican also tells us he would focus on making sure public school districts are adequately funded, even as the state launches its private school voucher program, which he supports as well.

“I believe all Texans want strong educational outcomes for kids no matter how they get that education, whether it be public, private, charter, homeschool, we just want our kids to succeed,” he said.

TX HD 98 is currently held by Republican state Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, who decided not to run for reelection.

The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3.
