BOYSJoshua holds off South Hills in bi-district
Joshua got a couple of fortunate bounces and held off a furious second-half rally by Fort Worth South Hills as the Owls escaped with a 2-1 win in a Class 5A Division 1 bi-district match on Friday at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth.
Joshua (8-10-5) moves on to the area round of the UIL playoffs and will face Aledo (19-3-2) early next week. Aledo defeated Denton 3-2, winning a shootout 4-3.
Joshua got on the board early when a free kick by the Owls was headed in by a South Hills defender for an own goal and a 1-0 lead. Joshua made it 2-0 in the 32’ on another advantageous bounce.
Joshua’s Carson Kilcoin tried to corral a bounding loose ball in the South Hills’ goalkeeper box, but was only able to dribble it forward. The ball, somehow, skipped past the Scorpions’ keeper and into the net.
South Hills (13-5-2) answered back a minute later when a ball bounced off of three players in the Joshua keepers’ box before Daviel Najar headed it in to cut the lead to 2-1.
Joshua was content to play defense in the second half, packing the box in front of goalkeeper Maverick Ramsey who saw 18 shots with 6 on goal after the break. Almost the entire second half was played in the Joshua end, but South Hills was unable to get the equalizer.
South Hills’ best scoring chance came in the 56th minute off a free kick by Jonathan Gonzalez. The kick, from 30 yards out on the left side, was punched over the crossbar by Joshua keeper Maverick Ramsey. The ball then hit the football goal post crossbar and bounded down to Luis Duenas who headed it from point-blank range toward the net.
The ball, however, ever so slightly ticked Joshua’s Josh Martinez and deflected toward the Scorpion’s Diego Garcia who was in perfect position to punch it in. But Subrav Pokhrel showed up in the nick of time for the Owls to boot the ball clear and end the rush.
Sam Houston comeback thwarts Irving
Arlington Sam Houston scored three unanswered goals after trailing 2-0 in the first half against Irving on Friday night.
Pedro Medellin hit the game winner in the 61st minute and the Texans pulled out a 3-2 win in a Class 6A Division 1 bi-district match at Glaspie Field on the campus of Arlington Martin High School.
Sam Houston (22-2-0), riding a 16-game win streak, will play Allen (20-4-1) in the area round. Allen beat Hebron 1-0 on Friday night.
Irving, which beat Sam Houston 6-0 in last season’s bi-district round, scored in the 3rd minute and 29th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Sam Houston cut the deficit in half during the 34th minute as Hector Ochoa hit a one-timer from 20 yards near the far post. The Texans drew fouls in the box during the 54th and 57th minutes.
The first penalty kick was wide and hit the left post, but Medellin took the second PK and scored the equalizer. The Texans grabbed their first lead at 3-2 when Antonio Zavala assisted on Medellin’s second goal from 10 yards out with under 20 minutes remaining.
It’s the first playoff win for Sam Houston since the 2017 season when the Texans reached the 6A state title game.
Paschal surprises Centennial to advance
Fort Worth Paschal got a goal from Max Halliday in the 44th minute and goalkeeper Emiliano Larios made it stand up as the Panthers eliminated Burleson Centennial 1-0 in a Class 5A Division I bi-district match on Friday at Clark Stadium in Fort Worth.
Paschal (14-6-1) will move on to meet Colleyville Heritage (11-5-8) in the area round early next week. Colleyville Heritage downed Fort Worth Chisholm Trail 3-1 on Friday.
Halliday, a defender, found himself in the keepers box where a solid cross found him. The senior buried a header into the net for the only score of the game.
Centennial (16-5-3), the District 8-5A champion, out shot Paschal for the game, but its 6 shots on goal couldn’t get past Larios.
Aledo needs a shootout to oust Denton
Aledo won a district title last year before suffering a heartbreaking loss in their playoff opener to cut the season short. Aledo made sure not to have that feeling again on Thursday night against Denton.
The Bearcats knocked off the Broncos 3-2 with a 4-3 advantage in a shootout in their Class 5A Division 1 bi-district game at Eagle Mountain High School in Fort Worth. Aledo (20-3-2), which hasn’t lost a game since Jan. 13, will play Joshua (8-10-5) in the area round after the Owls surprised Fort Worth South Hills 2-1 on Friday.

Godley (12-7-0) lost the season opener to the Lions 5-2, but things were different for the 5-4A champions from Brownwood this time around. Godley, the fourth-place team out of 6-4A, battled to what looked like would be an overtime game or a shootout.
But Jimenez quelled that in the 76’ to break the scoreless tie. Hudson Fry was stellar in goal for Brownwood as the Lions extended their unbeaten streak to 14 matches.
