SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio journalism community is mourning the loss of a longtime leader and mentor whose impact spanned generations.
Diana “DeeDee” Fuentes, a respected journalist and advocate, has died, according to the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists and Investigative Reporters & Editors.
In a statement shared Thursday, Fuentes was described as “a giant in our industry,” and her passing has come as a shock to many in the community.
“Her legacy will continue in everyone she influenced,” SAAHJ said in a statement.
IRE confirmed Fuentes died unexpectedly in Washington, D.C., where she was attending a conference. She had served as the organization’s executive director since April 2021.
With more than 35 years in journalism, Fuentes previously worked as deputy metro editor at the San Antonio Express-News and held leadership roles across several journalism organizations. She also helped establish and grow the SAAHJ.
Colleagues said Fuentes was known for her warmth, leadership, and commitment to mentoring young journalists. She played a key role in guiding IRE through the COVID-19 pandemic and its 50th anniversary, while advocating for diversity, inclusion, and press freedom.
Fuentes was also an educator, teaching at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Texas State University, where she recently earned her master’s degree. Her work extended to organizations such as the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and the Society of Professional Journalists.
A Hall of Fame member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Fuentes was remembered as a passionate defender of open records and journalist safety.
IRE leaders said the organization will share more information in the coming days on how it plans to honor her legacy.
