Record heatwave persists as fire danger increases this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Happy Spring! Record heat across the area is impacting the South Plains today and a good chunk of the next week as a stubborn high pressure system sits just to our west. Increasing winds along with the spiking temperatures will create more dangerous fire conditions this weekend.

TONIGHT

Quiet and mild again as low temperatures remain around 50 degrees for the second night in a row.

Winds remain quiet and calm overnight.

SATURDAY

Extreme heat for this time of year is heading our way. In fact, the current record for the hottest 2-day high temperature in the entire month of March is 95°. We’ve got 97° forecasted for Saturday afternoon.

SUNDAY

Sunday’s high temperatures will be heavily dependent on the timing of our next cold front pushing through the area. The current models are pushing it through around mid-day to early afternoon which will means highs topping out in the upper 80s to mid 90s.

Winds will ramp up behind the front, gusting to more than 30 mph at times heading into Monday morning.

UPCOMING WEATHER PATTERN – NEXT WEEK

Sundays cold front will usher in a brief respite of record temps with Monday projected to be in the mid 70s. We’ll quickly rebound to near 90 Tuesday and it’s off the races again for the middle of next week. We’re currently eyeing a possible cold front arriving late next week bringing us another chance for a respite from this record heat we’ve got the majority of the next week.
