A man was injured in a shooting accident at an indoor gun range on Saturday afternoon, officials with the White Settlement Police Department said.

Officers responded to the Shoot Smart indoor gun range in the 8200 block of West Freeway around 4:21 p.m. after receiving a report of the incident, according to a statement.

First responders immediately began providing aid to the injured man, who had accidentally shot himself in the hand while unloading his firearm at the conclusion of a shooting session, officials said. The man removed a magazine from the gun, and, with his hand covering the muzzle, accidentally pulled the trigger.

The gunshot caused a serious injury resulting in the loss of function to the man’s hand and fingers, police said. He was taken to an area hospital in non-life threatening condition and is expected to survive.

“We continue to reaffirm firearms safety across the community when we have conversations about proper gun handling so that unsafe situations like this can be avoided,” officials said in the statement.
