SAN ANTONIO – We’re learning more about a hit-and-run on the Southwest side that left a young tow-truck driver in critical condition.
Brandy Salinas’ son has spent more than a month in the hospital, fighting to recover after he was brutally hit by a car in the middle of the night.
“He’s still making progress in the right direction,” Salinas said.
No one’s been held responsible.
“He was just trying to do his job, and you didn’t slow down or move over. That was wrong,” said one of two witnesses who saw the hit-and-run.
The young couple, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the 24-year-old was coming to tow their car from the side of the road when he was hit back in February.
“We were both sitting in the car, and we noticed he was kind of taking a while,” one said, mentioning she planned to get out of the car to check on things when a car came racing down the freeway.
“I thought the car that was speeding hit his door that opened,” she said. “I get out, and I just see his door was shut, but it was just him on the ground.”
The teens said it was just past 1 a.m., adding that the road was empty, but the heartbreaking image was clear.
“He was lying on the ground. There was blood all over, and everything, and his leg was cut off from his knee, and his part of his leg was on like the other side of the road,” they described. “Then we called 911.”
It’s an act Salinas said she’ll never be able to repay the pair for. Julian was left with a severe brain injury, broken bones, and a full leg amputation.
“It’s a traumatic event for them, but they were his angels,” she said. “They are the reason [Julian’s] here. As a mom, I’m grateful for that…if they had left, Julian wouldn’t be here right now.”
San Antonio police say investigators are looking for a silver sedan believed to be a Chrysler. The teens say that the report conflicts with what they saw.
“The car was white, that’s for sure. It was like light enough around for us to see that and everything,” they said.
While investigators track down a suspect, Brandy is focusing on her son’s recovery.
Everyone involved is hoping answers come soon enough.
“Everything that goes on in the dark will come to light,” the couple said. “You will be found no matter how long it takes.”
