In his career, Texas women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer has compiled a 477-211 record. One of those losses he vividly remembers.

Meanwhile, Oregon’s Kelly Graves is 646-297. And he vividly remembers one of those wins.

Schaefer and Graves will be on opposing benches Sunday when Texas hosts Oregon at Moody Center in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It will be the first time they’ve coached against each other since the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Back then, Schaefer was the head coach at Mississippi State. During the 2019 Elite Eight, Oregon advanced to its first Final Four with an 88-84 win over Mississippi State in Portland. That game between the top-seeded Bulldogs and second-seeded Ducks featured both teams shooting around 50% from the field, 14 total turnovers and a 31-point performance from Oregon legend Sabrina Ionescu.

Over the years, Schaefer has repeatedly stated that his 2018-19 Mississippi State team was better than the ones he coached into the NCAA championship games in 2017 and 2018. So that 2019 loss still stings. On Saturday, both coaches were asked to look back on that matchup.

“Part of the NCAA Tournament is, and my media has heard me say this before, you’ve got to get hot and you’ve got to have a little luck. We were unlucky,” Schaefer said. “We had to go out there and play in front of 13,000 Ducks and play his best team ever, and got beat 88-84. You can count on one finger how many games I’ve lost when my teams have scored 84 points. And it was that night. And Ionescu was so special. But he had a whole team full of special players.”

Said Graves: “Honestly, one of the greatest games I’ve ever been a part of. I think the most well-played game I’ve ever been a part of. Both teams. I think it was 88-84. Obviously a big stage, winner to the Final Four. … It was just a great basketball game. It went back and forth. We were fortunate enough to get the win, but that was a long time ago.”

In total, Graves and Schaefer have split the four games they’ve coached against each other. On Sunday, Schaefer’s Longhorns will be the No. 1 seed in the Fort Worth 3 section of the NCAA bracket while Graves’ Ducks are seeded eighth. Texas (32-3) opened its tournament run with Friday’s 87-45 win over Missouri State. Oregon (23-12) beat Virginia Tech by 10 points in its opener.
