FORT WORTH
“Schollmaier After Dark” is coming to Fort Worth on Sunday when TCU women’s basketball faces off with Washington at 9 p.m. at Schollmaier Arena in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Why do the Horned Frogs have such a late start time? Because Duke, LSU, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas are the other host sites Sunday, leaving no West Coast team for the late time slot on ESPN.
This late start comes on top of the Horned Frogs getting an early tipoff of 11 a.m. for Friday’s first-round win over UC San Diego, as well as not being assigned to the Fort Worth regional. TCU will have to travel to Sacramento, California, for the Sweet 16 if it wins Sunday instead of staying at home and playing at Dickies Arena.
TCU head coach Mark Campbell said he refused to complain or let his team complain.
“I don’t even know how they picked the times,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s TV. I don’t know if the NCAA picks it. I don’t know exactly. I’m a little confused. Or, you know, an 11 a.m. tip on a weekday isn’t ideal time, and then a 9 p.m. tip on a Sunday isn’t ideal. But, you guys, I will never complain. I don’t want my team to complain.”
“It’s March, and we will play at any game time, on any court, any location, any opponent. It’s March, and these are young people, so there will be no excuses.”
Campbell did say he would like to learn more about the scheduling process.
“It’s a head-scratcher,” he said. “…But at the end of the day, we’re going to show up, and we’re going to be ready, and we’re going to compete, and there’s going to be no excuses coming from our team or our program. So that’s how I would address it. But I’m gonna learn what is the process and who’s choosing these game times.”
A big reason these tipoff times are seen as unfair is how they impact attendance. Starting at 11 a.m. Friday and 9 p.m. Sunday can make it difficult for working people or families to attend games they otherwise might.
Campbell acknowledged this pitfall but said he hopes the Fort Worth community will show out for the Horned Frogs on Sunday night.
“I hope Fort Worth comes regardless of that 9 p.m. tip,” he said. “It is late. Most people have work Monday morning. But these opportunities to host March Madness here in Fort Worth at [Schollmaier Arena], it’s a rare and special occasion. So I hope our community and I hope our student fan base, we have the biggest student turnout that we’ve ever had in the history of TCU.”
Third-seeded TCU (30-5) is an 8.5-point favorite over No. 6 Washington (22-10) as the Horned Frogs try to advance to a second straight Sweet 16.
