SAN ANTONIO – A man was killed after being struck by a southbound train when he would not move off the tracks, according to police.
Around 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to the scene of a reported pedestrian-involved train incident near the corner of West Craig Place and Ripley Avenue.
At the scene, Sgt. Shaughness Bennett, said the conductor reported seeing a man, roughly 30 to 34 years old, walking on the tracks and “swaying from side to side,” appearing intoxicated.
Bennett said the train repeatedly honked to warn the man, and the crew called police from “pretty far back,” giving him time to get out of the way, but “unfortunately, he didn’t.”
The man was struck by the train and “was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Bennett said. He said EMS had already responded by the time officers arrived.
Crime scene investigators were taking photos at the scene, and police were waiting for night detectives and the medical examiner to respond, Bennett said.
Bennett said the man had not been identified. He said officers asked neighbors in the area, but they did not know who he was.

Bennett said Union Pacific personnel arrived and were speaking with the train crew. He said the crew was “out of New Braunfels, I think,” and that the railroad would also handle its own procedures related to the incident.
