BATON ROUGE, La. — Texas A&M football overcame decades of Baton Rouge frustration with an impressive 49-25 win Saturday night over LSU, improving to 8-0 and staying on target in the Southeastern Conference.

A&M hadn’t won in Baton Rouge since 1994.

The No. 3 Aggies were carried by quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards and another two scores. He was A&M’s lone offensive standout; Rueben Owens II rushed for 44 yards and no touchdowns on eight carries, Mario Craver was held to four catches for 42 yards and KC Concepcion had three grabs for 45 yards, though one of those was a touchdown. Concepion did, however, make his mark in special teams with a 79-yard touchdown on a punt return.

It’s been all Aggies in the third quarter as they’ve turned a four-point halftime deficit into a 17-point lead. This time, A&M freshman running back Jamarion Morrow houses a 24-yard screen pass to push its lead to 35-18.

8:47, 3Q: Concepcion’s punt return pushes A&M lead to double-digits

A&M couldn’t have started the second half any better. After forcing a three-and-out on defense, KC Concepcion extends the Aggies’ lead to 28-18 with a 79-yard punt return.

10:41, 3Q: Aggies regain lead on 1st possession of half

A&M needed to regain momentum, and they did so with their first drive of the second half. A Terry Bussey kickoff return to the 44-yard line started the Aggies’ drive, which was finished by a nine-play series culminating in Reed scoring from five yards out. 21-18 A&M.

Thanks to a second interception, the Tigers got the ball at midfield and added three points with a 30-yard attempt.

3:09, 2Q: Tigers take 1st lead of night 

Thanks to a personal foul on cornerback Dezz Ricks that extended LSU’s drive on third down, the Tigers take their first lead of the night. The penalty allowed LSU to cover 75 yards in eight plays and score a 7-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point attempt is no good, making it 15-14 Tigers.

12:13, 2Q: LSU blocks punt, gets safety

A very ugly drive for A&M goes from bad to worse. The Aggies had an erroneous snap that nearly resulted in an interception by Reed. A&M was forced to punt, but the kick was blocked and rolled out the back of the end zone for a safety. The lead is now cut to 14-9.

The Aggies’ offense has been nearly flawless to start this game, scoring two touchdowns on their first two drives. This time, a 10-play drive covered 75 yards and was finished \with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Concepcion. 14-7 A&M.

LSU’s offense responded well after A&M’s scoring drive, covering 74 yards in eight plays to tie the game at 7-7.

Picking up where he left off the last time these two teams met, Marcel Reed puts A&M on the board with a 41-yard touchdown run. 7-0 Aggies.
