Vice President JD Vance is arriving in Austin on Monday, potentially creating delays for some drivers caught in road closures for his visit.
City officials said the Monday morning closures will stretch from the airport to downtown. Closures on Cesar Chavez Street from Red River Street to Brazos Street are expected to last overnight until Tuesday morning.
The city is asking drivers to take alternate routes or take advantage of public transportation, if possible. People should also avoid parking along any part of the route.
The Federal Aviation Administration has also issued temporary flight restrictions for the same time period in anticipation of Vance’s arrival.
City officials did not say why Vance is visiting the area, but Axios Austin reports that he is part of a Republican National Committee fundraiser. Vance is the committee’s finance chair. He is also expected to headline similar fundraisers in Dallas and Nashville over the next week.
This is a developing story.
