EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – El Paso County deputies arrested a barricaded suspect who was wanted on charges of second-degree assault last Wednesday near Falcon.
Deputies said they arrested 61-year-old Rodney Cordova after he barricaded himself in his home and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deployed its SWAT team.
According to deputies, last Wednesday at about 8 p.m. they responded to the 11150 block of East Highway 24 to locate and arrest Cordova.
Upon arrival, deputies said they located Cordova’s vehicle at the residence and confirmed he was inside with other occupants. Deputies said the occupants exited the home voluntarily, except for Cordova.
Deputies said they established a perimeter and made several attempts to call Cordova to reach a peaceful resolution.
Deputies said that, based on information in the arrest warrant and witness statements, they believed Cordova was armed.
Due to this information and Cordova’s refusal to come out, deputies said they deployed their SWAT team and crisis negotiators.
Deputies said the tactical team deployed chemical irritants to safely force Cordova out of his residence. Deputies said he came out of his home; however, he still resisted orders from law enforcement.
Deputies said they then deployed pepper ball irritants, after which Cordova complied and was taken into custody.
Deputies said Cordova was taken to the El Paso County Jail and was charged with second-degree assault, menacing, crimes against an at-risk person, harassment and third-degree assault. As of Monday morning, he is being held on a $25,000 bond.
