1. ICE agents deploy to airports to assist TSA amid partial government shutdown
The Trump administration has deployed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to a few U.S. airports to help address long security lines and staffing shortages as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers continue to go unpaid during the ongoing partial government shutdown.
According to reporting by The New York Times, border czar Tom Homan has directed ICE agents to 13 airports nationwide. Those locations include Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport, LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Southwest Florida International Airport.
ICE agents were also seen at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which was not on the reported list of airports.Â
2. Supreme Court rejects appeal from Texas death row inmate Rodney Reed
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from longtime Texas death row inmate Rodney Reed, who has sought to test crime-scene evidence he says will help clear him.
The justices left in place a ruling against Reed from the federal appeals court in New Orleans for the second time in less than three years.
3. National average gas price could climb above $4 this week
Despite President Donald Trump’s announcement Monday that he will not immediately attack Iran’s energy infrastructure, gas prices are expected to continue to climb. A new analysis from GasBuddy expects the national average for a gallon of gasoline to hit $4, potentially as early as this week.
