Pioneering history as the first university in the country to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ballet, TCU’s School for Classical & Contemporary Dance is ranked among the top 20 dance programs in the country, according to College Factual.
While student performers balance class schedules and a week off for spring break, the department is eager to highlight its dancers and their work.
Elizabeth Gillaspy, a professor in the School for Classical & Contemporary Dance, said the program continues to build on its long-standing reputation.
“We are building on a long legacy of excellence, and we continue to look toward the future with the number of premieres we produce each year,” Gillaspy said. “It’s an exciting array of repertoire.”
Gillaspy said her favorite part of the show is watching the students perform.
“The amazing students of SCC Dance are so invested in their learning, their work and their goals,” Gillaspy said. “I have great colleagues, too. It’s an inspiring place.”
The performance will take place at Erma Lowe Hall’s Studio Theatre on the third floor. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for TCU faculty/staff and $5 for TCU students with valid student IDs.
“We’ve been working on these pieces since January,” said Eva Bogdanovitch, a sophomore modern dance major. “Rehearsals are about two to three times a week for a few hours.”
“In the beginning of the school year, all dance majors audition, and we are cast for the first semester,” Bogdanovitch said. “For second semester, we are cast by our work in the classroom.”
Audience members can expect to see a wide variety of pieces, featuring both ballet and modern dance.
Performances are scheduled for:
7:30–9:30 p.m. Friday, March 27
1:30–3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28
7:30–9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28
1:30–3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29
The annual spring concert highlights months of preparation and gives student dancers an opportunity to showcase their artistry and growth in the department. With a mix of new premieres and diverse choreography, the event celebrates the talent and dedication that define the TCU dance program.
