SAN ANTONIO, Tx — At tonight’s meeting Balcones Heights city council members voted 3-2 to keep Mayor Johnny Rodriguez locked out of city hall. His key card no longer works.
The restriction comes after several Balcones Heights city employees accused the mayor of creating a toxic work environment and threatening to fire city officials.
Mayor Johnny Rodriguez claims he is actually the one under attack. He says his fellow city council members are abusing their power by locking him out of his office at city hall.
During the city council meeting Mayor Rodriguez had police escort former city council member Manuel Juan Lacea Jr. out of the meeting when he attempted to discuss his experiences with the mayor.
“His style of leadership is leadership by intimidation,” Lacea Jr. said. “Leadership by coercion, leadership by intimidation all around. I, have been a victim of his retaliation.”
Balcones Height chief of police Roger Cavazos says the mayor access to city hall is restricted to protect the employees’ rights and to prevent them from feeling pressured while they are being interviewed about the allegations.
