Police say a suspect doubled back during a foot chase and stole a marked SAPD patrol vehicle before officers recovered it with help from multiple agencies.

SAN ANTONIO — A traffic stop on the southwest side of San Antonio took a wild turn early Tuesday morning when a suspect allegedly stole a marked SAPD patrol vehicle during a foot chase.

According to preliminary police information, officers were conducting a traffic stop near Palo Alto Road and Mohawk Street around 3:55 a.m. when two suspects ran from the scene on foot.

As officers chased them, police said they lost sight of the suspects and began searching the area.

That’s when, investigators say, one of the suspects doubled back, got into a marked SAPD patrol vehicle and drove off.

With help from Eagle, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Lytle police, officers were able to recover the stolen patrol vehicle.

Police said one suspect, identified as 21-year-old Michael Aguirre, was later taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
