Some things happen in Lubbock that, if you tried to explain them to someone from literally anywhere else, they’d assume you were exaggerating. You’re not. This is just…life here.

Here are a couple of the weirdest things you’ll see around town that don’t faze locals a bit:

Our Transportation

For starters, yes, people will absolutely ride horses to the store. Not for a special event. Not for a parade. Not even as a joke. Just because it makes sense to do it that day. Oh, and, while we’re on the subject of transportation, Lubbock drivers also have a special talent for ignoring red lights (and driving hammered), which unfortunately quite often leads to someone driving into a building. It happens so often here that nobody even flinches anymore. Not cool.

Don’t get me started on our weather. You wake up freezing, you’re sweating by lunch, and you need a coat by dinnertime. Oh, and somewhere in the middle of all that, a massive wall of dust just might roll through and end visibility for a period of time for the entire city. No big deal. Totally normal, right? We just pull over and wait it out…

Our Social Hangs

Social life in Lubbock has its own unique rhythm, too. You’ll always find the high school kids hanging out at Sonic. Always. Entire friend groups post up in that parking lot like it’s some kind of community center for wayward youth. Meanwhile, most adults are living the “bars on Saturday, church on Sunday” type of lifestyle like clockwork.

And the sights? Basically unmatched. You might see a Ghostbusters car cruising down the street. A random mariachi band might play a show in the Whataburger parking lot at midnight. Someone somewhere is grilling in the back of his truck while driving. You never know what you’ll run into in Lubbock, but odds are in your favor that it will at least be interesting.

You’ll also see prairie dogs treated like local celebrities around here, people gutting a deer in their garage on a casual Tuesday, and you just might run into your entire extended family on a single grocery store run.

The wildest thing about all of this is that none of it feels weird to anyone who lives here. Not by a long shot.

It’s just Lubbock.
