SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County judge has sentenced a 26-year-old man to 40 years in prison for the murder of his partner and common-law husband, an 81-year-old man who died after his throat was cut with a knife.

In a news release, the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office said a judge sentenced Alberto Ferrer Cabrera on Friday, March 20, 2026, to 40 years in prison for the murder of Donald Atha Weynandt.

The district attorney’s office said that on Feb. 1, 2025, Cabrera confessed to a 911 dispatcher, his landlord, and responding detectives that he had killed Weynandt.

According to the investigation, the release said Cabrera offered no clear motive for the killing, stating only that he felt “stressed” about transporting his 4-year-old son from Colombia to the United States.

Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Brittany Mitchell and Angela Payne of the Family Violence Division led the prosecution team, with support from Victim Advocate Marina Winter and Investigator Yvette Guerrero, the release said.

“Mr. Weynandt deserved to live out his life in safety and dignity,” District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Our office remains committed to holding those who commit acts of violence fully accountable.”

He will serve the remainder of his sentence in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
