BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M track & field’s Etoro Bassey and Jahnile Registre earned SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week and Women’s Runner of the Week honors, respectively, following standout performances at the UTSA Invitational, the league announced Tuesday.
Bassey secured the first SEC weekly honor of his career after an impressive showing in his outdoor debut. The freshman won the high jump at the UTSA Invitational with a leap of 2.19m/7-2.25, the mark ranks No. 1 in the country this year and debuted him at No. 6 in the Aggie record books.
Registre also earned her first conference honor of the year following a pair of standout showings. She opened up in the 400m, crossing the line in 52.15 which was good for second in the event, first among collegiate athletes and ranks No. 2 in the country. She followed that up anchoring the 4x400m and leading the team to a time of 3:33.16 which tops the nation.
The Aggies stay on the road and head to the Raleigh Relays, March 26-28, held at the Paul Derr Track & Field facility.
