The San Marcos, Buda and Kyle city councils have recently discussed and taken action on a number of items pertaining to development and grant funds.

Catch up on government news and updates from the cities, including a development code update, potential mixed-use development and housing grant allocations.

1. San Marcos works to allocate $740K housing and community grant

City of San Marcos staff is in the process of selecting projects to be funded by a $740,000 grant for fair housing and demands for community and housing development.

Projects and programs selected to receive funding from the grant are required to serve those earning a low to moderate income or must “eliminate slum or blight,” according to agenda documents.

Citizens will have the opportunity to speak on community needs and city staff will make project recommendations at an April 7 meeting. A 30-day public comment period will be held during the month of May, and the City Council will officially consider project recipients at a July 7 meeting.

2. Buda approves $242K contract for development code update

The Buda City Council approved a contract to Kending Keast Collaborative for a comprehensive update of the city’s Unified Development Code, or UDC, at a Feb. 17 meeting. The contract may not exceed $242,260.

The comprehensive update to the UDC is meant to align city development code with the goals and standards detailed in other long-term planning documents, according to agenda documents.

The full comprehensive update is expected to be complete in 18 months, around August 2027, said Angela Kennedy, city of Buda development services director, at the meeting. At that point, the updates will be presented for council approval.

3. Proposed 34-acre development could bring new housing and retail to Kyle

Kyle residents could get new housing, hotel and retail options as a proposed mixed-use development is in the works. City Council members heard a presentation on the potential project at a March 3 meeting.

The Crossroads District development would bring 15.03 acres of commercial space for retail and service businesses, as currently designed. It would include 19.27 acres of mixed-use development space, adding 535 units of multifamily housing to the area.

The developers will need approximately two to three months before presenting a completed development agreement, finalized planned unit development zoning and updated project design to the council for an official vote.
