History

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington women’s tennis couldn’t make it back-to-back wins, falling in its midweek tilt with the Cal Poly Mustangs 6-1. The Mavericks were looking for victories in consecutive matches for the second time this spring. 

UTA (4-11) lost doubles Court 1 and Court 2, but had a chance to take Court 3 with the match being allowed to finish. Flora Farkaslaki and Diana Kaibara battled hard against the Cal Poly duo of Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako and Amy Leather, but the Mustangs eked out a 7-5 win.

The Mavericks lone point came on singles Court 1. Elizaveta Mladentseva was in the midst of a third set battle with Cal Poly’s Kennedy Buntrock, where Buntrock was forced to retire due to an injury that occurred with the pair tied 1-1. Mladentseva won the second set 6-4 after Buntrock opened with a 6-1 victory. 

Cal Poly (8-6) won the remaining five singles tilts. Diana Kaibara had the upperhand on the Mustangs’ Jessica MacCallum after winning the first set 7-5, but MacCallum won by the same margin in the second. MacCallum went on to defeat Kaibara 10-2 in a super tiebreaker in the decisive third set, pushing the Court 2 point in favor of Cal Poly.

The final four bouts were won by the Mustangs in straight sets. Tasnime Ahamout’s bout with Jakupovic-Kljako saw each set go to a tiebreaker, but the UTA freshman wasn’t able to prevail. 

A pair of weekend matches represent UTA’s next chances to get back into the win column. The Mavericks face Arkansas State at 4 p.m. Friday and UTSA at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both matches take place at the UTA Tennis Center.
