Drivers along Interstate 35 in southern Dallas are getting a preview of a major new park taking shape above the highway — one that is now just weeks away from opening to the public.

Halprin Park, located in Oak Cliff, is expected to open on May 9. The project, built over I-35, is designed to offer green space, recreation and sweeping views of the Dallas skyline, while also serving as a catalyst for economic development in the area.

NBC 5 was given an up-close look at the site Tuesday, where construction is nearing completion on the first phase of the project.

The park will feature amenities for both children and adults, including nature-inspired play areas, seating spaces, a performance shell and options for food and drink. Organizers say the design focuses on accessibility and inclusivity.

April Allen, president and CEO of Halprin Park, described how the children’s area was created with a specific vision in mind.

“But our children’s area has a tree house in the woods inspiration. So you see it’s very nature based, lots of amenities for kids, play structure and seesaws, auditory options. We really wanted to make sure it was reflective of all abilities,” Allen said.

The park is part of a public-private partnership, with the current portion and a future expansion carrying a combined price tag of $300 million.

Project leaders believe that investment could pay off by attracting new development to southern Dallas, an area they say has historically seen fewer resources than other parts of the city.

“I think we have an opportunity with this park to really create some more economic development in a part of Dallas that hasn’t really seen that type of investment in the same way maybe other parts of the city have,” Allen said.

Organizers say community feedback has played a key role in shaping the park’s design and purpose.

Allen emphasized the importance of ensuring the project directly benefits nearby residents.

“It’s also about how we lift up this neighborhood and this community. We think that we can really use the park to benefit the people that live in this neighborhood and we’ve been very intentional about that,” Allen said.

The May opening marks only the first phase of Halprin Park. A second phase is planned to extend the park further into Dallas.
