Corpus Christi City Council voted 5-3 on Tuesday to move forward with procedural steps in a potential removal process for Mayor Paulette Guajardo.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with the procedural steps required to begin the potential removal of Mayor Paulette Guajardo.

The motion passed in a 5-3 vote.

Council members Carolyn Vaughn, Eric Cantu, Gil Hernandez, Kaylynn Paxson and Sylvia Campos voted in favor of setting an agenda item and date for preliminary and procedural matters tied to a removal hearing.

Council members Roland Barrera, Everett Roy and Mark Scott voted against the motion.

The vote does not remove the mayor, but instead advances the process by scheduling the next steps required under city procedures.

The meeting is expected to take place April 14.
