SAN ANTONIO – Following the recent street-racing accident that shocked the community, local motorsports hero and racing legend, Jorge Mendoza, has spoken about the incident.

“These kinds of accidents have to stop,” Mendoza said. “I hate to see this kind of news. There is a lot of work to be done to prevent this from happening. Punishment helps, but we must address the root cause.”

Mendoza believes the cultural problem behind street racing has been building for decades.

“Movies have always promoted chasing and speeding on the streets,” he said. “We’ve been feeding that to the brains of our youth for years. This issue needs education.”

Mendoza emphasizes that motorsports are built on discipline, training, and safety, and that they are not to be attempted on public roads.

On Monday, police arrested a suspect in connection with a potentially racing-related crash that left a 12-year-old boy dead, alongside the 20-year-old driver.

Investigators said witnesses reported that the sedan and a black pickup truck were racing when the sedan lost control, spun into oncoming traffic, and crashed into another vehicle.
