Around Texas
1. Questions grow over proposed ‘mega’ immigration detention facility in El Paso
Questions and concerns are mounting over a possible large-scale immigration detention center planned for the El Paso area, as local officials say the federal government has shared little information about the project.
The uncertainty comes as new details emerge about three massive warehouses recently purchased by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, properties that could soon be converted into one of the largest immigration detention facilities in the country.
2. University of North Texas to cut more than 70 programs and minors to trim $45 million deficit
The University of North Texas is cutting or consolidating more than 70 academic programs, minors and certificates as it works to close a projected $45 million budget shortfall, including phasing out its linguistics degrees and eliminating a women’s and gender studies master’s program.
The cuts are the first indication of how UNT plans to close the deficit, which it says was driven largely by a sharp decline in international enrollment — students who typically pay significantly higher tuition — and reduced state funding. Last month, university leaders warned that program consolidations, faculty buyouts and higher teaching loads were likely.
3. Musk announces plans for ‘largest chip manufacturing facility ever’
Billionaire Elon Musk announced plans to build a chip-manufacturing facility during a weekend presentation in Austin.
During a livestream on Saturday, Musk said the Terafab project would be a collaboration between his companies Tesla, SpaceX and xAI. The name comes from the project’s goal of producing one terawatt of computing annually.

March Madness is Miller time for Texas as the No. 11 Longhorns return to the Sweet 16
Sean Miller was the coach at Xavier last season when he knocked Texas out of the NCAA Tournament. A week later, Miller was wearing burnt orange and flashing a “hook ‘em horns” hand sign when he was introduced as the Longhorns’ new head coach.
Call it a good hire. After a bumpy first regular season where the Longhorns barely made it into the NCAA Tournament, Miller has the No. 11-seed Longhorns cruising into a surprise Sweet 16 as this season’s March Madness bracket buster.
