EDINBURGH, Scotland (WKRC) – A mother was found guilty of attempted murder after she repeatedly tried to kill her toddler with adult medication for “the drama” and “the attention.”
According to court documents obtained by The Times and STV News, 35-year-old Laura Docherty gave her toddler a large quantity of antidepressants and painkillers between April 2021 and February 2023 that led to her being placed on a ventilator to save her life.
Authorities said Docherty gave the child amitriptyline, propranolol and dihydrocodeine in various locations, including her home, at the hospital, and other unspecified locations. The first instance of this allegedly occurred when the child was just 2 years old.
The child suffered seizures and reduced consciousness, leading to unnecessary hospital visits and medical procedures.
“Her actions were utterly reckless and breathtakingly wicked,” said Judge Michael O’Grady at the High Court in Edinburgh. “Time and again she deceived doctors and nurses and social workers and showed considerable guile.”
O’Grady said that the fact that the child survived was in no part thanks to Docherty, but was due to the hard work of the doctors and paramedics that attended to her.

The judge further said that Docherty tortured her child “or nothing more than the drama of the moment and the attention you seem to seek at every turn.”
