SAN ANTONIO — A man was arrested early Tuesday for allegedly stealing a San Antonio Police Department patrol car during a traffic stop on the Southwest Side.

Michael Aguirre, 21, faces charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and theft of property, according to jail records.

The incident began just before 4 a.m. while officers were conducting a traffic stop near Palo Alto Road and Mohawk Street when two suspects fled on foot.

Officers began chasing the suspects but “lost sight of them” at some point.

While officers were searching the area, one of the suspects doubled back and entered a marked SAPD patrol vehicle and drove off.

Aguirre was eventually apprehended after he hit a dead end on Live Oak Street in Lytle, police said. The vehicle was recovered with the assistance of SAPD’s Eagle helicopter, Bexar County, and the Lytle Police Department.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said one of their patrol units followed SAPD to give real time updates while other units converged around I-35 South and deployed spikes.
