AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Two men are dead following a shooting on South Dallas Street on Sunday.
The families spoke about the losses and how they plan to keep their memories alive.
Virgil Lee Thompson and Larry Jimenez died Sunday after responding to gunfire near family member’s home
Virgil Lee Thompson’s family described him as a hard worker, family man and all around great person.
Lee, as he is known by family and friends, was a brother, father, son and friend to anyone he met.
His family says he was the centerpiece of their family and a hero on that tragic Sunday morning.
Lee and his best friend Larry Jimenez heard gunfire in the early morning hours in the direction of his aunt’s house.
Without hesitation, Lee and Larry ran over to check on his family when he was then shot and killed by the shooter.
His family says without the heroism from Lee, Larry and the people inside the home, the outcome could have been much worse.
“Everyone should know that Lee is a hero, bottom line really. And you know we’re going to do our best to make sure everybody knows that and remembers,” said Brandon Thompson, Lee’s brother. “You know and if they feel like something’s wrong call and get help you know? No matter the situation man just call and get help if you really deep down decide and feel like you need it.”
James Pena, 40, was arrested and charged with the capital murder of multiple persons.

On Sunday, Pena shot his father, stepmother, brother, Lee and Larry.

The family says the other three wounded in the shooting are recovering and still in the hospital.
Court documents show a motion suggesting incompetency and request for examination.
Pena is in the Randall County Jail.
