Texas Tech University has once again been recognized as one of the top institutions of higher education
in the country for service members and military families.
Texas Tech has been awarded the 2026-27 Military Friendly® School designation, cementing
its commitment to current and former military members and future leaders to continue
their education. Texas Tech has been recognized as Military Friendly® each year since
2010.
“Texas Tech is proud to be a place where military service members, veterans and their
families can pursue their goals and find support along the way,” said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. “Through programs like the Military & Veterans Program, ROTC and the commitment
of faculty and staff across the university, we are dedicated to helping these students
succeed as part of the Red Raider family.”
Created in 2010, the Texas Tech Military & Veterans Program (MVP) has been dedicated to helping veterans and their families not only obtain a
quality college education but achieve personal and professional success. MVP assists
individuals in transitioning from military to student life by establishing educational
benefits, encouraging campus and community engagement and providing a positive student
experience.
MVP has built its success on service, commitment, integrity and growth, offering financial
aid, academic assistance and support for students.
“To receive this recognition is an affirmation of the level of campus wide commitment
that makes our Red Raider family special,” said Gracie Guerra, MVP Director. “We recognize
that our military connected students strengthen our community through their unique
leadership, global perspectives and altruistic nature. It is an honor to work together
as a community to support our active-duty service members, veterans and their families
in their journey to graduation and professional success.”
Also central to this designation is the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs at Texas Tech. These ROTC detachments are dedicated to developing the next
generation of leaders through character and discipline to prepare them for future
success.
This recognition is one of several Texas Tech has earned over the years, including
rankings from Military Times and U.S. News & World Report as well as being recognized
as the first Purple Heart University in Texas in 2014. Most recently, Military Times
ranked Texas Tech No. 18 in its 2025 Best for Vets colleges list in November.
“The military friendly recognition is such an important designation for Texas Tech
University,” said Matt Gregory, Dean of Students. “It not only affirms the work of our staff who support our ROTC students, student
veterans and veteran dependent students, it serves as a sign to all that our military
community matters to us.”
The Military Friendly® designation is awarded by Viqtory Media through an evaluation
of both publicly available data on schools and proprietary information acquired through
a self-assessment survey. The survey is offered to more than 8,800 colleges and universities
nationwide, and scrutiny of institutions increases each year the survey is completed.
Methodology, criteria and other factors are developed with the assistance of an independent
research firm and Viqtory’s advisory council.
Among the factors in the survey, graduation and career outcomes (30%) and military
student support and retention (30%) carry the most weight, while other factors considered
include financial aid and loan repayment (12%), culture and commitment (10%), admissions
and orientation (9%) and academic policies and compliance (9%).
