Before you plan your weekend in Houston, check out these I-10 closures that kick off at 9 and 10 p.m. Friday and last through early Monday morning.

HOUSTON — Texas Department of Transportation crews will implement a major traffic switch on the I-10 White Oak Bayou Elevation Project beginning at 10 p.m. Friday. There are multiple closures and detours that drivers in Houston’s Heights area should prepare for. Separately, TxDOT also announced it will close I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound mainlanes for pavement repairs during the same weekend.

The White Oak Bayou switch marks a milestone in the project to raise I-10 mainlanes above the White Oak Bayou floodplain between Heights Boulevard and I-45. The work also includes reconstruction of the I-10 HOV lanes and the Houston Avenue Bridge.

The most immediate impact for drivers will be a total closure of the I-10 westbound frontage road from Studemont Street to Heights Boulevard, from 10 p.m. Friday, March 27, through 5 a.m. Monday, March 30.

Northbound motorists on Studemont Street should turn left onto White Oak Drive, then left onto Heights Boulevard, before turning right onto the westbound frontage road to reach the I-10 westbound mainlanes. Southbound motorists on Studemont should turn right onto Washington Avenue, then right onto Heights Boulevard, before turning left onto the westbound frontage road.

The I-10 westbound exit ramp to Heights Boulevard will also close at 10 p.m. on March 27 and will remain shut until further notice. Drivers who would normally use that exit should instead take the next ramp to Patterson Street, perform a U-turn at the intersection, and continue along the eastbound frontage road to reach Heights Boulevard and Yale Street.

On the positive side, the westbound Taylor Street exit ramp is scheduled to reopen Monday, March 30, operating as a single lane on the newly constructed bridge and pavement. The project will also involve demolition of a temporary Heights Boulevard exit ramp and reconstruction of the westbound mainlanes at the western end of the project. The westbound exit ramp to Heights Boulevard is expected to remain closed through mid-2026.

Full closure eastbound this weekend

In addition to the White Oak Bayou work, TxDOT crews will close the I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound mainlanes from I-610 West Loop/US 290 to Washington Avenue/Westcott Street for pavement repairs, also beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, and running through 5 a.m. Monday, March 30.

“While we will continue to make outstanding progress as this project continues, during construction, drivers are advised to follow posted detour signs and remain vigilant of changing traffic patterns,” the agency said in a statement.

“Patience and caution will be essential to ensure safety as construction advances.”

All closures are subject to change due to weather.
