NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Vanderbilt women’s basketball is one of 16 teams left in the hunt for the national championship after an impressive first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
The Commodores made it to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 17 years.
After hosting the first two rounds at Memorial Gymnasium, Vanderbilt is heading to Fort Worth, Texas. Commodore Nation gave the team a send-off this afternoon with gold and black in sight.
It has been almost 20 days since the team last traveled, but road trips are nothing new for them. The Commodores opened the season in Paris.
“It was great to host, but I think it’s going to be a really cool environment in Fort Worth, and we are really happy we are in Fort Worth and not Sacramento no hate, but a lot of our families are going to get to be there, so we are really excited,” Jada Brown said.
“We’ve been on the road all year, we are excited, I mean we’ve been to Paris, the Virgin Islands, stayed a week in South Carolina, so we are kind of used to it. We are going to make the most of it as well cause it’s our seniors last trip,” Blakes said.
“You know we finished up in Memorial, but the goal was to make it out of Memorial. We are very excited to go to Fort Worth and excited to play down there,” Sacha Washington said.
Vanderbilt faces Notre Dame, which has the third-best scorer in Division I this season in Hannah Hidalgo.
The Commodores have the leader in Mikayla Blakes.
#2 Vanderbilt and #6 Notre Dame will tip off Friday in Fort Worth at 1:30 p.m. Central.
