HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An armed suspect is dead after a police officer fired shots at him in the Gulfton area in southwest Houston on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers received a call at 3:52 p.m. on Wednesday about a man walking westbound in the 5800 block of Glenmont Drive with a black handgun inside a pink purse.

Authorities said an officer arrived at the scene five minutes later and saw the man carrying the purse on Glenmont. The officer then got out of his vehicle and verbally commanded the man to put the purse down, officials said.

After he ignored the officer’s multiple instructions to put the purse down, the man pulled out the gun from the purse and pointed it at the officer, investigators said.

The officer then pulled out his pistol and began to fire rounds at the suspect, according to HPD, adding that the suspect then returned fire at the officer. Investigators said there were multiple rounds fired back and forth between the two men, with the officer getting behind his patrol car for cover.

Police said the suspect then ran into an apartment complex nearby, with the officer chasing after him and firing more rounds. The suspect was shot multiple times by the officer, officials said.

When first responders later arrived at the scene, they rendered aid to the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

HPD said the officer involved was grazed by the gunshots but was not sent to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

Near the scene of the incident, there is a high school and a K-8 charter school. ABC13 spoke with Ana Trejo, who said she made the initial 911 call, expressing her concern due to the schools nearby.

“He was just walking around with a gun,” Trejo said. “There were kids coming out of the school, and he was just staring at the kids. There was a bus dropping kids off from the school whenever everything happened.”

SkyEye was overhead, capturing a heavy police presence and first responders at the scene.
