The Renegades will have a new face under center in 2026.
Dallas head coach Rick Neuheisel named former Western Kentucky standout Austin Reed the team’s starting quarterback for their season opener Saturday against the Houston Gamblers.
“I want to see what Austin can do. I think there’s some some gifts there, some DNA that’s ultra competitive,” Neuheisel said Wednesday. “If he can channel that, keep his calm and be within himself. He’s got some tools that I think he should be playing on Sundays.”

The move relegates longtime Renegades starter Luis Perez to the bench. Perez led the UFL in passing yards the past two seasons and led the team to an XFL title in 2023, winning the championship game MVP in the process.
Despite the big change, Neuheisel said he envisions both players contributing throughout the year.
“We know that Luis can play this position and play it well,“ Neuheisel said. ”I would expect that both (quarterbacks) will play, and I think it’ll be that way all season long because they’re both such quality people, and this is an opportunity league. But I’m anxious to watch (Reed) go.”
The Renegades’ season begins Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when they host the Houston Gamblers at Frisco’s Toyota Stadium during Week 1 of the new-look UFL’s season.
