Thank you, Jeffrey Arndt, VIA Metropolitan Transit’s former president and CEO, for so clearly and factually making the case for riding the bus. I am a frequent rider of VIA, and it has been a way to manage a two-person, one-car household for the 21 years we’ve lived at our residence.

I hope to age in place and have made sure all of my professional service providers (from my hairdresser to my ophthalmologist) are easily accessible by bus.

VIA and Google Map apps make planning a  ride so easy. I know, in real time, when my bus is coming and when I can expect to arrive at my destination. I get aboard, pay my senior fare of 25 cents (round trip, and free on weekends), find a seat, sit back and relax in climate-controlled comfort, with an expert driver at the wheel.

Then it’s just a matter of choosing between reading my book or responding to a few texts or emails with the free Wi-Fi. I am one of VIA’s biggest fans, and I try to share my wonderful experiences with everyone I know.

I truly feel welcomed aboard.

That might speed up a solution to one of our budget issues.

Washington, D.C., is a joke these days, but no one is laughing.

President Donald Trump has no idea about the basic agreement among the member countries of NATO.

Nothing expressed or implied in the agreement says a member country can, without provocation or evidence of wrongdoing, suddenly declare war on another country and then expect other countries to jump in.

In 2015, long after I had retired from teaching elementary school and before Trump was elected, I wrote a letter to the Express-News expressing my dismay that someone so obviously ignorant of American history and government could ever hope to be elected president of the United States.

He had no idea what was in the Constitution. When he was elected, Trump thought everybody in government worked for him.

Unfortunately, using lies and threats, and with a lot of help from his friends, Trump’s mistaken ambitions are slowly being realized.

If Republican politicians don’t wake up and reclaim their jobs, we will no longer have to wonder how far Trump would go to achieve his stated desire to be “president for life.”
