A man was shot and killed by an officer after Castle Hills police say he approached the officer with a knife during a hit-and-run investigation.

The shooting occurred about 8:30 a.m. on the west frontage road in the 1000 block of Loop 410, near San Pedro Avenue, according to Castle Hills police Chief Gary McHone.

An officer was investigating a reported hit-and-run collision in the area when an “encounter” occurred with a driver, police said.

“It’s a high traffic area, typical for this time of day,” McHone said. “Upon starting their initial investigation, that individual exited with weapons and approached the officer.”

Dash cam footage of the incident — which unfolded in less than 20 seconds — was captured by a witness at the scene and sent into News 4 San Antonio.

The footage starts with a red Dodge Ram pickup seen on the median between exit 19B and the access road, at the base of the onramp to Northwest Military Highway. An officer and a paramedic can be seen nearby.

As the officer walks up to the pickup, a tall man emerges from the driver’s seat wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and boots. The man begins walking toward the approaching officer.

The officer draws his gun, aims at the man and begins stepping back as the man continues his approach.

The man begins running toward the officer, raising both fists. A shiny metal object can be seen clenched in one hand, and a black object can be seen in the other, blending in with the black hoodie.

The officer begins firing shots at the man, who appears to point the object in a plunging motion at the officer. It appears to be at least five shots as the shell casings can be seen flying in the air.

The man falls to the ground just as the officer falls back onto the hood of the car the dash cam is recording from.

Afterward, the officer who fired the shots and another Castle Hills officer can be seen putting on black gloves to tend to the man alongside a San Antonio Fire Department first responder.

As police investigated the scene, McHone said the driver had emerged from the pickup with “one or more knives.”

The driver later died at the hospital, according to News 4 San Antonio. McHone said police would release details about the driver as the investigation continues.

No officers have been reported injured. The scene is secure, and there is no threat to the public.

The Texas Rangers are responding and will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
