Internet discourse over dress codes in restaurants unfolded recently after Chili’s playfully called out Ruth’s Chris Steak House on its business attire dress code.
According to a report from The Independent, Ruth’s Chris went viral on X after a user posted about its dress code prohibiting sportswear and baseball hats. The upscale restaurant’s website says “business casual – proper attire” is required and that patrons can not come in “gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing clothing or exposed undergarments.”
Fast-casual, Dallas-based chain Chili’s issued a counter-response to the policy.

“The only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed,” the company said in a post on X.
Thousands of people responded to the restaurant’s post, igniting debate online. Many agreed with Chili’s stance, saying things like “Chilis would never turn us away in times of need,” or “I’d rather go to chilis.”
One person on X said “we can’t all have class. Good thing Chili’s is here for the bottom feeders.”
Some were more understanding, with one person saying, “Well Chili’s is where we go to on a Thursday night for margs and chips. Ruth’s Chris is where we go for special moments. So thank goodness they set standards because some people would come dressed for a Thursday night at Chili’s if not prevented.”
