AUSTIN, Texas — Today, the Austin City Council will consider major zoning changes aimed at adding smaller-scale housing and bringing more neighborhood retail into communities. Council could vote on a resolution that creates two new zoning districts that allow a wider range of smaller housing options to be built around the city. These smaller housing options include townhomes, cottage courts and flats. The resolution also creates a new zoning district for developments that mix housing and commercial space, ranging from corner stores to offices.

City officials say these changes would create more accessible housing and more walkable neighborhoods. Councilmembers also believe this could help with affordability by creating more housing options. This comes as Zillow shows the average rent price in Austin is around $1,865.
