A construction project will lead drivers traveling on the Northwest side of San Antonio near downtown to face major traffic delays. The city’s official Public Works agency announced that the closures will last a few months.
Crews will start removing the existing, deteriorated surface and placing new asphalt on Capitol Avenue, located off Interstate 10, on Monday, March 23, the entity announced via a social media statement. It includes the stretch from West Mistletoe Avenue to Fredericksburg Road.Â
Due to the activity, no through traffic, except emergency vehicles, will be allowed after 8:30 a.m. until at least the end of September 2026. Parking in the zone is also prohibited from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and those who do not adhere to the rule will be towed to a nearby street, per San Antonio Public Works.
Those based in the Beacon Hill and Alta Vista neighborhoods may be the most impacted, as they aren’t far from the site. Residents in the work zone are being advised to remove any personal and decorative items from the curb line, as they could get damaged.
Construction is scheduled to occur during the work week from sunrise to sundown. Barring any severe weather, the roadway should be fully resurfaced come the fall season. The initiative is a part of the 2022-2027 Bond Program and will be completed in phases, the SA Speak Up website states.
“Prior to each construction phase, a separate notification will be distributed to impacted residents,” the organization’s page states.
Additional improvements include widening sidewalks to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, fixing driveway approaches, and installing ADA ramps.
