The corner of South St. Mary’s and King William Streets in San Antonio is about to look very different.
“Hey hey! It’s a brand new day for The Station Cafe! We’re MOVING to 1010 S. Flores!” the post reads. “We’re going to work hard to get open quickly to continue to serve y’all tasty toasted sandwiches! Have a great day!”
Google lists the eatery as temporarily closed. When MySA visited, the space was completely gutted on the inside, and two signs were plastered to street-facing windows notifying hungry San Antonians of the move.
The new space appears to be on the ground floor of 1010 South Flores Apartments, perhaps in the former home of Latin American eatery Diez Flores, which shuttered in June 2024 after less than a year in operation. Tenants of the apartment building also live above a brow studio, craft workshop, coffee shop and more.
As for when The Station Cafe will be moving in, the restaurant’s post didn’t give a timeline, but its website says they “hope to be back open the first week of April.” MySA reached out for more information, but did not hear back at the time of publication.
The Filling Station, a beloved Southtown San Antonio staple, closes after nearly 15 years
The Station Cafe opened in 2006 inside the historic Texaco gas station on the corner of South St. Mary’s and King William Streets. In 2011, it moved next door to its outgoing location, and The Filling Station Tap Room set up shop inside the old Texaco.
Throughout the 14 years that followed, it became a popular spot for San Antonio’s cyclists to grab a cold beer and a quick bite to eat while riding through downtown. However, owner Jon Rowe told MySA on March 12 that The Filling Station Tap Room would close for good on March 21 as business was “just not enough to sustain a new lease,” adding that the cafe would remain open.
Rowe said at the time, the decision to close The Filling Station was “a little bit heartbreaking” but also a relief “because for the last three years, ever since the [COVID-19] pandemic, it’s been more a labor of love than a labor of profit.”
“So, you know, after a while … it’s hard to do a bunch of work for not really any money,” he said.
