SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department will meet to discuss its collective bargaining agreement as city leaders push to add more officers to the force.

The San Antonio Police Officers’ Association and the City of San Antonio are set to negotiate terms of the agreement, which covers officer pay, overtime, discipline and time off.

The current contract is set to expire Sept. 30.

The meeting comes as city leaders consider hiring more than 100 new officers, with some council members advocating for as many as 360 hires over a five-year period following a recent study on public safety needs.

District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears emphasized the importance of early planning as the city prepares for budget season.

“The earlier we can express our intent and our focus for budget, the better, and that way anything that we’re really focused on can be incorporated into the budget as budget season nears,” Spears said.
