More than four dozen people have been moved into alternative housing after the fire sparked early Tuesday at The Mark Austin apartments on West 23rd Street.
AUSTIN, Texas — More than four dozen people are currently unable to return home after an apartment building caught fire Tuesday near the University of Texas at Austin campus.Â
The Austin Fire Department (AFD) said in an update on Thursday that 52 people cannot yet go home after the fire sparked at The Mark Austin apartment complex at 812 W. 23rd St.Â
AFD said crews initially responded to the fire at around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday. Once on scene, responders said the fire was located in an electrical room on the eighth floor.Â
The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, with 88 responders and 28 units arriving on scene. Crews were eventually able to put out the flames, which were limited to one room and a hallway. Some floors were also damaged by water, AFD said.Â
Hundreds of residents were evacuated upon initial response but most were able to return to their units before 5 a.m. Tuesday.Â
The 52 residents unable to return home have since been given alternate housing through the help of apartment management, the Red Cross and UT Austin’s student services.Â
No injuries were reported Tuesday, but AFD said one person was evaluated and then released by the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS).
First responders said the fire was unintentional but have not said exactly how it started.Â
