SAN JOSE, Calif — Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn got arguably the biggest offensive board of his life on a tip-in with 0.7 seconds left against No. 11 seed Texas in the Sweet 16 to send the No. 2 seed Boilermakers to the Elite Eight with a 79-77 win against the Longhorns on Thursday.
It was a gritty game featuring 10 lead changes and 16 ties and went down to the final possession, with many in the SAP Center thinking it might be going to overtime too.

Purdue had led 73-72 with a minute to play. The Boilers went to their star, All-American point guard Braden Smith, who drove to the basket for a layup and put Purdue up 75-72 with 38 seconds left. Texas missed a 3 on the other end but snagged the offensive rebound, and Purdue responded by fouling UT big man Matas Vokietaitis, who’d struggled from the line earlier in the tournament. He drained both, though, bringing Texas back within one. On the other end, Purdue hit two free throws.
A defensive mistake from Purdue’s Oscar Cluff put Texas guard Dailyn Swain at the line after he slashed to the basket for an and-1. He hit the free throw, and the game was tied with 10.9 seconds. That set up Kaufman-Renn’s heroics.
The senior knew the smart thing to do anytime a guard drives to the basket is to crash the boards. Smith drove, and Kaufman-Renn got in position to rebound. When his tip-in went in, Purdue’s bench and crowd exploded.
Kaufman-Renn finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, including four offensive boards. Fletcher Loyer had 18 points, including 13 in the first half after a hot shooting start.
The Boilers’ dramatic win overshadowed a gutsy performance from Texas guard Tramon Mark, who scored 29 despite an injury to his right leg that left him hobbling around the court. Mark was spectacular but missed his last three shot attempts in the final 4:41.
Texas, which started the tournament in the First Four, was the last remaining double-digit seed in the bracket. Purdue will meet the winner of Arizona-Arkansas in the West Regional Final on Saturday.
